- One thing that I really like to stress to my students is the importance of thinking about retouching in a bit of a different way than you might originally be taught. What do I mean? I have a specific mantra that I really live by when it comes to retouching because I think a lot of people can very easily get frustrated with Photoshop because there are so many possibilities and it's overwhelming. So when you're first starting out, I love to tell my students, "90% of what you do to this image can be achieved by changing a pixel's color or changing its brightness darkness value." That's my 90% rule, and it literally rings true for 90% of the retouching that we do. If you are getting frustrated, for any reason, with Photoshop, and it's not reacting properly for you, and you're getting a really bad result, just sit back, look away from the computer, take a deep breath and say, they are just pixels.
