Review your resume for clarity and concision
- You're going to feel great when you have a solid draft of your resume in hand, but hold the phone, you're not done yet. This thing needs to be a marketing masterpiece, so take some time and make sure that it's clear and concise. Here are three things that I recommend that you do. First, read your entire resume out loud. This is the easiest way to make sure nothing sounds weird or clunky or redundant, and if something sounds strange coming out of your mouth, assume that the reviewer is going to have trouble with it as well. Next, if it's feeling a little bit text-heavy, challenge yourself to remove achievements that aren't strategically relevant to the jobs you're working to land. This may be a little bit challenging, but I assure you that removing extraneous achievements doesn't mean that they don't matter or that you shouldn't be incredibly proud of all the things you've done in your career, not at all. Instead, it'll make it easier for people to see in an instant how and why you're a great fit for the job you're trying to land. And last, remove any unnecessary words. Generative AI can help you with this as well. Head over to ChatGPT and try using this prompt. Please simplify the following sentence, and then add the sentence you're thinking might need a little fine-tuning. You may also find writing apps, like Grammarly or Hemingway Editor, helpful as you work to ensure your final product is easy to understand and gets right to the point.
