- Before I share with you the five practices of highly resilient people, I want to share a practice that I use daily whenever I'm facing difficult things that are outside of my control. Educator, author, and businessman, Stephen Covey, introduced "control the controllables" and how we take back our control in his book, "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People." Covey delineated between what we can control and what we can't. And while most of us know what's within our control and what's outside of our control, just because we know it doesn't mean we do it. I interviewed people about how they invested their time during the day, and I asked people how much of their precious resources, time, energy, and mental space they expended on things that were outside of their control versus within their control.
