- It's game time. Something's happened and you need to put your incident response plan into action. Assuming you've done all the advance work, now it's time to get to work. In advising clients to put their plan into action I recommend the following five steps. I call them deploy, detach, decide, discover, and debrief. First, deploy the plan you've crafted. You've rehearsed it and communicated it for this situation. If there are other stakeholders who must be consulted, get them involved as early as possible. Remind them that the plan was reviewed and agreed to and the steps are in place to ensure the best outcome for the company and its reputation. Now this next one might be tricky, but you need to detach from the emotion of what is happening. You might feel upset or outraged or sad at the situation.
