Why feedback is so powerful, especially now
- [Speaker] Up until about a decade ago, most user experienced researchers either brought people into labs to do tests, or they went to people's offices or homes. In an age where product development has accelerated and we find ourselves building products and services for global audiences and needing to empower more people to collect insights, the improvements in remote technologies have enabled us to choose when we need to be in the same place and when we don't need to. So why is remote research so important now? The global pandemic has changed the landscape. With rolling shutdowns, travel bans, and remote work, most of what we do happens remotely. As the situation evolves, and we move into a time when hybrid work from home and office will be the new model, it's clear that some of the things we've done to connect with people over the past year will persist into the future. Let's talk about the power of remote research. First, it is asynchronous. That means that you can be doing basically anything else at the same time that one or more people are answering questions or doing tasks on their own. It expands your reach globally. Rather than spend time flying to a lab location in another city or country, people can complete tests in their own homes with your guidance. Also, since many of us are still subject to travel bans or work from home, lab research has become impractical if not impossible. It also broadens your reach across communities. Sometimes it's harder to cross cultural or religious barriers in person. Remote testing enables you to scale up your work to ask new questions of groups that you may not have been able to talk to. For all these reasons, remote research is also more efficient, cost and time savings are significant. Finally, keep in mind that remote research includes a variety of strategies like surveys, interviews, usability testing, diary, and longitudinal studies among others. User testing can be used across many of these contexts and more, but there is one final consideration. Sometimes there is just no replacement for being there. When you need to see the context and be in the moment alongside someone. Remote research can and should be just a part of the journey to make that connection. So remote research helps you to get feedback from people across environments, time, and contexts using a number of strategies. Use it wisely to understand your users before, during, and after your design and development efforts.
