- [Instructor] All models of the Raspberry Pi require an SD card. It takes the place of a hard drive. SD cards are cheap, less than $25, but before you buy one, there are a couple of things you should know. First, be aware that formatting an SD card for use with the Raspberry Pi will overwrite everything on the card. You cannot use it with another device. And anything else you might've had on that card will be lost. Early models of the Raspberry Pi used full size SD cards, but all current models of Raspberry Pi now use a microSD card. However, most laptops only support full-size cards. And in order to format an SD card, you need to use a laptop. In order to format a microSD card with a laptop, you'll need an SD card adapter. These are easy to purchase, and usually come as a set of micro SD card with the adapter. Your SD card should be a minimum of eight gigabytes.
