Process control vs. process capability
- A process in a state of control is a process with only common-cause variation and has no special causes. If there are special causes, then the process is not in control or out of control. Now, take note that SPC charts simply show variation in the process and helps you decide whether a process is in control or not. Control limits are determined by process behavior. Nobody can decide what the control limits should be. Control limits have nothing to do with what you or I'd want. They're simply the voice of the process. On the other hand, process capability is a measure of process performance against specifications. Note that specifications are based on the voice of the customer. Graphing a histogram of process variation against specifications, one can determine how well specifications are met.
