Understand the fundamental principles of analytical design
So, the fundamental question we have to answer today is why are we here? Why are we interested in designing and performing visualizations and exploring our data in a visual way? Of course, different people have different answers for this. So David McAnlis, one of the great designers and visualizers of our times, says that information visualization is a form of knowledge compression. So it's a way of processing and analyzing large amounts of data in a way that is efficient and intuitive as possible. On the other hand, Edward Tufte will claim that there is no such thing as information overload, there's only bad design. What this means is that there is, in principle, no limit to how much information you're able to process in this way if you're able to design it properly and you're able to encode it in a way that is intuitive and easy to understand. Hans Rosling, on the other hand, advises that you should never leave a number all by itself. Never believe that one number of its own can be…
