- My father used to say, quoting Ian Fleming, author of the James Bond books, "Once is happenstance, twice is coincidence, three times is enemy action." When we're thinking about burnout at work we are not concerned about the odd bad day, the occasional irritability or the infrequent absences for illness. One instance is happenstance. If there are two similar instances of behavior that is generally out of character for you or you see repeated instances of people around you acting with unusual caution, it is worth monitoring. But at this point it could just be coincidence. When occasional becomes regular and frequent, something is amiss, and it makes sense to reevaluate and take action. What is the first thing you notice in someone who is burned out? Maybe they are more moody and volatile than usual.
