What is a RACI matrix?
- Project plans describe the work you need to do but they don't always specify who needs to do it. And it's inefficient and frustrating if everyone on the team doesn't know exactly what they're supposed to do. There are four roles for every task, responsible, accountable, consult, and inform. And we can assign these roles by building a RACI matrix. Take your list of tasks and add a column for each of the people on your team. Now go through the list and ask what role does each team member have here? If they have no role in the task leave it blank. If they need to help complete the task they're responsible. Put an R in the box. If they're the task owner, they're accountable. And there should be one and only one accountable owner for every task. If they should be asked about a task, then they're a consult. And if they need to be told about a task they're an inform. I like to get my team involved in creating a RACI matrix because it helps to build consensus and gets everyone focused on the contributions that they need to make to ensure the project is successful.
