- Gathering requirements reminds me of that old TV show about Detective Columbo. When everyone else was satisfied with an answer, Columbo would always say, "Just one more thing." That's the mindset we need to have in our projects. Our job is to find out where all of the requirements are hiding and to bring them out into plain sight. An important part of this research involves matching our data gathering techniques with our sources of information. When you need to get input from senior executives, you'll probably need to schedule a one-on-one meeting. You can start the meeting with a quick explanation of what you're doing and then ask an open-ended question like, "What are the things that you'd look for "to determine whether this project was successful?" If you need to gather input from a large group of customers, you can use an online survey. I generally use Qualtrics or Survey Monkey. They both offer free versions and include…
