What is a good idea?
- If you don't know how to evaluate ideas, it's hard to be sure that you've got a good one. Without the ability to judge ideas properly, decision-makers often support confident salespeople rather than great ideas, and that's probably how we ended up with fidget spinners. So let's make it easier to identify ideas that are good for business, and by that, I mean that the idea will differentiate the business or give it an advantage in the marketplace. I've created a metrics to help with this. The vertical axis here measures obviousness or, more specifically, non-obviousness. Any ideas that's obvious lies down here at the bottom because it's obvious. Everyone else is doing it. The best you can expect from an idea in this zone is that it brings you up to the same level as your competitors. That's better than nothing, but you're more ambitious than that, aren't you?
