Making text readable
- [Instructor] Have you ever tried to read a book when you're cold, sleepy, hungry, or stressed? You might have found yourself struggling to understand the words on the page or you might have kept reading the same page or paragraph over and over again. Our temporary states there mimics neurodivergent folks reading text that doesn't meet readability targets. What is readability, you might wonder. Readability is the ease with which text can be read and understood. Just like any other aspects of accessibility, we can measure readability. When we measure the readability of web content there are many factors that affect the results. Such as, whether the text can be seen at a distance, whether it can be seen with peripheral vision, whether it can be distinguished on the page, how many times and how fast the eyes need to move to read that text, and how tired the eyes get from reading our text.
