The damper pedal

The damper pedal

- The pedal on the right is called the damper pedal. When you hold the damper pedal down, any tone you sound will continue after you release the key. This sign tells you when to put the pedal down, how long to hold the pedal, and when to release the pedal. In Harp Song, you'll be using the damper pedal. I'd like to show you how to do that. Take your right foot, and put the ball of it on the right pedal. Keep your heel on the floor. When you see the pedal sign, you'll push your foot down, hold it, and then, when the pedal sign comes up, you'll release it. It's important to keep your foot on the pedal. When you release it, you don't want to lift your foot up. Also, you don't want your heel going like that. Keep it perfectly on the floor. Here's what the first four measures of Harp Song sound like, with the pedal. One, two, three. (piano notes play) You'll lift the pedal at the end of the line.
