Creating and editing Smart Objects

Smart objects offer a non-destructive and flexible way to work with layers in Photoshop, especially when you're resizing, transforming, or warping your layers. I'm going to convert this background into a layer by clicking on the lock icon. Then I'll tap the V key in order to select the move tool and make sure that I have the show transform controls enabled. I'll hold down the option key on the Mac or the alt key on Windows, and let's transform this layer down. Then I'll tap Enter or Return in order to apply that transformation. As soon as we do this, Photoshop is going to throw away a bunch of information because we've resized the layer down. If I now decide that I want to resize the image up, again, I'll hold down the Option or the Alt key in order to drag from the center, then Photoshop's going to have to make up information.
