Asking for help (strategically)

You're great at helping your colleagues, but asking for help? That can be a real challenge. Here's how to do it. First, focus on the problem you're solving. It's not about admitting weakness or inconveniencing someone else. You care about the project, and someone else may be able to help solve it. For instance, you might say, I'm trying to solve X for the team, and you're the expert on that. Do you think you could offer some advice? Second, people often worry that if they ask for help, they'll be viewed as a taker. But remember, people often view it as a compliment to be asked for help, and you've probably helped that colleague in the past. They may be very happy to have a chance to reciprocate. Finally, if you really want to feel better asking for help, make it very easy for them to say no. You can say something like, you may be way too busy for this, and if you are, I totally understand.
