Creating the first draft
- It's time to write your employees' reviews, and you're going to need two hours for each one if you want to do them right. Now, most people want to start by filling in all of the quantitative ratings in the review. Instead, I want you to start by writing your narrative statements for each part. This is smart because narrative writing asks you to act on your overall feeling about the employee and you're pushed to sort through your memory for what's most important. Later, you can edit, but start with honest, raw comments. When you're done, you can then compare them to the summaries provided by other raters. Next, it's time to nail the numbers and fill out the ratings. To start, don't look back at that pile of data you collected. Just dive in and fill them out. When you're done, you can go back, look at the data, and make adjustments if needed. After the ratings, take a second look at your narrative comments. Then…
