The skills of an effective peer coach
- Some people might feel intimidated about becoming a peer coach. They envision the stereotypical coaches in sports movies, super extroverted, high energy, and they think, that's just not me. Truth is, peer coaches can succeed regardless of their personality type or communication style, but there are some skills that effective peer coaches have in common. We're going to look at five of those. First, peer coaches know how to use questions effectively. If a colleague describes a challenge they're facing, the coach doesn't say, "Okay, here's the solution." You need to do this or that. Instead, they ask questions that help their colleagues think through the strategy, and achieving the best possible outcomes for them. For example, they might say, "Which direction would help you move closer to your goal?" Or, "Is there another alternative you might be overlooking?"
