- Sure, you can use three by five cards to build your outline, but don't frustrate yourself. If you're eager to find some sort of organizational software tool, look no further than your word processor. Most major word processors have some type of outlining tools though the quality varies. In Google Docs, the outlining view merely displays a list of heading levels on the side of the document. In LibreOffice, the navigator shown on the left lists headings plus it offers buttons to rearrange topics. The best tools however reside in Microsoft Word which features an outline view. To enter outline view in Word, click the View tab and choose Outline. Because this is a view, the document's presentation changes. Heading styles are shown as outline levels and the outlining tab appears. This tab contains tools specific to outline organization, viewing, and so on.
