- Here is an outline for a novel organized by parts, chapters, events in the chapters, and some notes. It's bursting with information. This type of detailed outline is a great way to start a huge project. All this work makes creating the final product easier, yet such detail can get in the way. Unless you use some tools to help you manipulate the outline's view. To collapse an individual branch, double-click the topic's handle. The plus icon indicates a topic with subtopics, and double-clicking the handle collapses all the subtopics at once. Conversely, double-clicking also expands the entire branch as you see here. The keyboard shortcut to expand or collapse topics are the plus and minus keys on the numeric keypad, which expand and collapse in steps associated with each subtopic level.
