Draw organization models
Don't design around people. That's the biggest mistake leaders make when they design their organization. They pick the people that will report to them and then allocate work to each of these direct reports. This is classic designing around people. It changes the org chart but not the organization. So instead, design the organizational model and then choose a leadership team configuration that fits. Before we go on, let's pause here so we can get clear on some terms. Structure. Structure groups work and activities together. Remember, you only have four basic structures: function, product, geography, and customer. Organizational Model. The organizational model is a picture of how the structures are layered and linked in order to create the desired balance of power dynamics between the parts of the organization. Organization Chart.
