From the course: Open to Work: Building Key Career Skills in the Age of AI

Taking action to adapt

The minute AI went mainstream, when everyone was trying to figure out what this meant, that was my, oh my God moment. I mean, a lot of my jobs have been entirely about writing. And the moment AI went mainstream a few years ago, the first thing that it showed an ability to do was write, right out of the gate. I had to go, okay, what am I gonna do? Now I've had a career where I've had to start over and have chosen to start over multiple times. I went from journalism to politics. I went from politics to startups. I went from startups to big tech company. So I've had some habit formation. I know that when you encounter a moment of, oh my God, what do I do? That the best thing you can do is lean into it and say, okay, let me figure this out as quickly as I can because I'm going to figure it out ahead of most folks. The first thing you got to do if you want to adapt is to say to yourself, I need to adapt. The human brain is amazing But it is wired to fear change, and it is not wired to get exponential change. And we are in a moment of exponential change. So the first thing you've got to do is actually just push yourself. You've got to feel uncomfortable every day. You've got to be trying something new, failing in some new way, learning in some new way. You've just got to be in there. And it is going to be hard, and it's going to be messy, and it's going to feel really uncomfortable at the beginning. And if it's any or all of those things, you're doing exactly everything right. So you gotta get comfortable with being uncomfortable. That's probably the first thing I'd say. Now, there's simple steps about how you can do that, but you've gotta just start. It's really like going to the gym. I mean, there's no better way than to start and to just start every day in as simple a way as possible so that you'll commit to it. And so come up with whatever pact you have to do with your own brain. I'm gonna do this thing for this many days. Don't make it a New Year's resolution, which we all give up on, Because it's, I'm going to change everything by the end of the year. And after three weeks, you've forgotten it. I'm going to do this thing for this many days. And then I'm going to do this thing for this many days. And I'm going to either keep doing it or stop doing it based on what I learned. A lot of it really is just treating yourself and your brain like a scientific experiment. And testing and trying things. And knowing if you fail at something, you're going to learn something that helps you do the next test. So just get in the game. You just got to get in the game.
