- I started out this course with some comments about emergency preparedness and the fact that comprehensive planning for an emergency is really workplace and location dependent. I reviewed the basic concepts that you need to understand about emergency preparedness, evacuation, and fire safety. You should have noticed throughout these discussions that there's a great deal that depends on you. Things like getting some first aid training and taking the time to locate emergency exits. It's also up to you to understand your workplace's procedures for handling emergencies. It's not always enough to just sit in on that one training session that was conducted at your onboarding. Plans change and situations and conditions evolve. Yes, your employer may be required to do certain things to keep you safe at work, but it's often up to you to make the right decisions, like my earlier example of choosing to evacuate versus ignoring the fire alarm.
