- [Instructor] Earlier, we looked at an overview of a WAN connection between the customer and the service provider. This time, let us zoom in on the side of the customer and discuss the different WAN devices that we may have. First, we got a modem. The modem is the device that modulates and demodulates signals to the WAN link of the service provider. Back in the days, we used to have a dial-up modem that is connected to a line phone, which then converts the digital signals from the computer to analog signals that can be sent through the PSDN lines or the public switch telephone network. But in today's time, please be aware that the modem can now be integrated to the SOHO or small office, home office routers such as the modem router. On serial connections, the modem is known as a DCE, or data communications equipment as per the EIA.
