- What kind of training do lawyers get? You know a little about law school now and that you don't need a JD degree to become a great negotiator. Let me tell you a bit about how lawyers are trained once they're out of law school. Technically, a law graduate who has a juris doctor and has passed the bar exam is a lawyer. But because the bar exam and law school are not training ground for lawyers, the real expertise we gain comes from working at a law firm under a supervising attorney. Most attorneys become experts in the legal field that relates to the type of practice they have when they get their first job. Once they gain some experience and expertise, they begin to grow in competence in that field. It's there at a law firm with seasoned lawyers that a new attorney begins to shape their skills and where they can begin practicing the art of negotiation, working with clients through challenging issues, sparring with opposing…
