From the course: Negotiate Like a Lawyer

Overview

- Maybe you've seen lawyers on billboards claiming that they'll fight for your rights, or you've seen lawyers work their magic on a business deal, and somehow overcome obstacles reaching a favorable outcome. The truth is that lawyers are constantly in a state of negotiation, and many become skilled negotiators. Most people don't realize that lawyers aren't usually the type of negotiators that you'd see on TV. Lawyers aren't trained in many types of negotiation. They're not trained in sales negotiations. Usually, they aren't good at deescalating matters. They're not trained in hostage negotiations either. But to the extent that lawyers negotiate toward their clients' desired outcome, they have a knack, and I'd like to share with you what I believe can help you negotiate like a lawyer. I'm Dana Robinson. I've been a lawyer since 1999, and I've spent the past three decades in business myself, both as an entrepreneur and an executive. While I can't tell you that I'm the best negotiator, I think I can help you learn from what makes attorneys good at negotiating, and how you can be just as good of a negotiator as any lawyer. Maybe this will even help you next time you've got a lawyer on the other side of the table.
