There is one key innovation that makes NB-IT efficient, which is data over NAS, non-access stratum. This is a method specifically designed for transmitting small data packets directly over network's control plane, and it bypasses the need of traditional data channel setup. Let's see how it works. At its core, it's a brilliantly simple concept. Instead of device going through the entire process of establishing a data radio bearer which involves multiple signaling steps, it takes a shortcut. Small infrequent data packets are encapsulated and sent as a part of existing non-access stratum message. This means the device uses the always available control plane connection to the mobility management entity or MME to send its data. By doing so, it is completely avoiding the overhead and delay of setting up a dedicated data bearer. And the result is low-power, more efficient transmission.
