- Humanity has never been as healthy. In the developed parts of the world, we live, on average, 85 to 90 years, depending on the country. More importantly, the average person lives in poor health only the last five or six years. Thus, both the lifespan and the health span have increased. However, we continue to witness huge differences in health status by income level, race and ethnicity. Unfortunately, the prevalence of physical and mental chronic diseases is on the rise, and they account for 80 to 90% of total health care spending. We also have in the world right now, more people suffering from being obese than people suffering from hunger. 1 billion versus 900 million. The food industry, lack of exercise, and genetic and cultural aspects are to blame. The trouble is that being obese or overweight is a risk factor for many chronic conditions and diseases, diabetes, heart disease, joint problems, certain types of cancer, and so on.
