- The nature of careers is about to be upended. Long gone are the days when people would start at a company and hopefully be promoted all the way up to some important managerial position. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average American holds 13 different jobs during their lifetime, frequently moving from one company to another. But in the future, we will see people not just switching jobs, but switching careers. Why, how come? Simply because people live longer than in the past, and technological change makes whatever we know obsolete much faster than in the past. As a result, people will need to reinvent themselves multiple times. No official or comprehensive data on career switching exist, but most experts estimate that currently no more than 5% of Americans switch careers during their working life, but that percentage is going to grow quite quickly.
