You beat someone else for a promotion
- Woo hoo, you got promoted, congratulations. You probably spent the evening celebrating with your family and the next morning being congratulated by your managers and your colleagues. But you know your co-worker wanted that promotion, too. So what do you say? Do you act like nothing happened? Do you never speak to that person again? First, allow the person a cooling off period. Monday morning is not the time to walk up to their desk and ask them about their weekend. Don't be overly avoidant, just don't go out of your way to engage them. Later in the day, or in the next couple days, you'll want to acknowledge the situation without saying, I got promoted. Instead, say something like, Hey, I know you were after that promotion, too. Then compliment them. Don't blow smoke or come across as sorry you got it, but be empathetic. And end on a high note. Say something like you're looking forward to continuing to work together.
