Transforming anxiety into opportunity
- When facing a significant change, is it possible to shift from anxiety to excitement? In a series of studies, Harvard Associate Professor, Alison Wood Brooks, tested if it was possible to relabel anxiety to excitement. Participants were made to experience anxiety-inducing situations like public speaking or maths exams. The group that was asked to reappraise their pre-performance anxiety as excitement, for example, proclaiming "I am excited," weren't only more excited than those that didn't reappraise, they also performed better. The lesson here is the words that you attribute to a challenging situation can influence how you interpret and feel about it, and then how well you perform. It could also empower your teammates to feel the same.
