From the course: Nano Tips to Thrive in Uncertainty and Embrace Change with Shadé Zahrai

Playing the "What If?" game

- When facing high levels of uncertainty, our thoughts tend to instinctively fixate on what could go wrong, making us prone to catastrophize over the what-ifs. What if I fail? What if I can't? And this can trap you in a whirlpool of irrational rumination and worry. But what if you could quickly break this pattern and redirect your thoughts towards more productive outcomes? Here are two methods. First, practice benefit finding. Look for potential growth in each challenge. This mindset not only builds resilience, but also improves stress management. For example, change what if I don't get promoted to are there possible benefits in this situation, like other career opportunities or gaining experience? Second, list your 'will do' actions. Write down specific actions that you'll take in response to your what-if scenarios. For example, what if they reject my proposal, becomes I'll ask for detailed feedback, then refine the proposal and resubmit it when the timing is right. Practicing these simple shifts can help you move from worry to productive proactive action.
