How to identify and adapt to different communication styles

- Understanding the type of communication style that you possess, and discerning the communication styles of your colleagues and clients can lead to more effective communication overall. While I'm not suggesting that you change who you are, because adapting does not mean compromising your authenticity, adapting your communication style could be helpful to your interactions in the workplace. So here are three things to consider. Number one, gather preferences. One of the best ways to know someone's communication style and what works best for them is to directly ask them about their communication preferences. For example, how would you prefer to communicate through detailed reports or a high level summary? Or would you rather we discuss this over email or as a quick call better? This will save you time and make it easier for your message to be received as intended. Number two, evaluate your own preferences. What communication style do you find most effective? Direct, indirect, formal, informal, detail oriented, big picture. Not sure? Think about past communications with colleagues, friends, or clients. Were there any patterns in how you communicated? Consider feedback you received from others about your communication style. And number three, adapt. Be flexible and responsive to the different personalities, preferences, cultures, and needs of your colleagues. Being able to adapt a communication style that's most effective in your workplace can make things run a bit smoother, which can help you be more productive, waste less time, and hopefully stress a lot less. Give it a try and let me know how it goes.
