- We've spent a bit of time talking about theory, but now it's time to move on to specific techniques. Let's get things started with Photoshop. Now, before you can split a photograph into layers, you actually need to be able to select the individual pieces. I've opened up a photograph and I'll click here in the toolbar. Let's expand it to two columns. Now we'll come down to the Magic Wand here and click. Inside are additional tools, and I'll choose the Quick Selection tool. It's a very useful tool for making selections by simply dragging an image. Now what I can do is start to drag. You'll notice what it begins to do is make a very basic selection. This makes it easy to start to choose what it is that we want in the photograph and what we don't want. And by dragging through, it starts to recognize edges and details.
