Interpret the results of policy precedence, including using policy lookup
It's common for an item to be covered by more than one retention rule. For example, a mailbox might have an org-wide one-year retention policy, but an email in it has a five-year retention label, so we need to know which retention policy would win. M365 retention follows clear principles, which are often called the principles of retention. In short, the longest retention period wins. If content is subject to multiple retention durations, it will be retained for the longest of those periods. For example, if policy A says delete after 1 year, but policy B, or a label, says retain for 5 years, the item will be retained for 5 years. The system will not delete it at one year because another rule requires it to be kept longer. Retention takes priority over deletion. If one policy or label says keep content X and don't delete, and another says delete after five years, the keep instruction prevails.
