From the course: Microsoft Defender for Office 365

Course lab setup

- [Instructor] One of the most often-requested types of understanding is how is this course lab setup being run? And for the past year or so, I've gone ahead and added in the course lab setup portion prior to starting the course. So that way you understand what it is that I'm doing so you can follow along more easily. I'll be using a Windows client in this case, Windows 11, with the Outlook client application installed. This is not the same as the web client, which is called Outlook on the web. This is the installed application you get with the Office suite, such as Office 2021 or Microsoft 365 with Office. Any one of those will work fine, as long as you have the office application which you can install. Then I'll be connecting to a domain controller running Active Directory with Active Directory Sync. So what that means is that this computer will be a member of the domain and that domain will be an on-premises domain controller, which is the way most offices are set up. And I've synchronized my domain controller with an Entra ID database where you can get to that by going to portal.azure.com. If you don't have a test Windows server, you can go to the Windows Evaluation Center, which you can just do a search for on Google if you'd like. And you can download a Windows server and you can install it as a virtual machine on your Windows client. And then you can make that an active directory domain controller. After that, we're going to be going through a firewall, and from the firewall I'll be going off into the Azure Cloud. I'll be spending most of my time at defender.microsoft.com, but I'll also be looking at the Entra ID site, as well as admin.microsoft.com, which is where Microsoft 365 lives. And I'll be licensing some users, as well as utilizing the Microsoft 365 console to make many changes that will then affect the Defender website. So unlike my previous courses or many of my previous courses you have probably seen, there are a lot of different complex scenarios and setups you'll need to do. In this one, it's fairly simple: a client, a server, connection out to the cloud, and then access to the Defender website. What you'll learn in this course will not only enhance your skills, but also enhance your prospects for employment in this ever-changing field of security and Microsoft products.
