- [Instructor] Microsoft bases its calculation methodology on principles from the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and uses widely accepted ISO standards. Scope one and two, power usage for scope one and two emission is categorized by storage compute network. Usage time in these categories helps in attribution of scope one and two emissions. The calculation of scope three emissions starts with the lifecycle evaluation of materials that are used in Microsoft data center infrastructure and carbon emissions by data center. Microsoft segments this calculation based on the customer usage of each data center. A critical aspect to understanding emissions accounting is that the same emissions that are classified as Scope 1 and 2 for one organization can be recognized as scope three for another.
