Okay, you can be honest with me. When you first read the title of this lesson, What is Cloud Computing? You probably already had a pretty good idea of what the answer is. It seems simple enough, but is it? What if I asked you a different question? For example, what is a chair? Simple enough, right? You might say a chair is a piece of furniture with legs and a back, and you sit on it. Sure enough, you've described a type of chair, but what about a stool? Stool doesn't have a back, but it's considered a chair. Or what about a beanbag chair? It doesn't even have legs. When you actually try to define cloud computing, it gets more complicated than you might think at first. And that's why we're starting with this in lesson one. We're going to talk about the evolution of computing and how the cloud solves some of the problems businesses have dealt with over the years. We'll also introduce the shared responsibility model and we'll talk about some key benefits of the cloud, including some cloud terminology that will be important to you for future lessons. We'll also talk about IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS cloud services, and we'll cover details on public, private, and hybrid clouds. So let's get started with a brief, and I mean very brief, history lesson on computing.
