Search for content
- [Instructor] One of the nice things about the Security & Compliance center is that it allows you to perform searches across your Office 365 environment. So let's take a look at how that works. As you can see, I'm the Security & Compliance center, and I'm going to scroll down and go to Search, followed by Content search. I'll click on Content search. And this is going to take me to the Search interface. Now, if I want to perform a search, what I would do is click on New search, and then I would enter my keywords that I want to search for. I'll just enter something generic, like Office. The next thing that you have to do is specify the scope of your search. In other words, what locations do you want to search? So, I could choose All locations and search across the entire Office 365 environment, or I can narrow things down a bit, and to that, I would choose Specific locations, and then click Modify, and then I would pick the portion of Office 365 that I want to search. For example, I could confine my search to Exchange mail, or to Skype for Business, or something like that. I'll go ahead and close this out, and I'm going to choose to search all locations. So next, I would click Save & run, and I'm prompted to save my search. I'll just call this Office. And then, if this were a real world environment, I would probably want to enter a description of the search, just so I would have that description on hand for documentation purposes. I'll click Save. And the search begins. Now, it's worth noting that the search can take a long time to complete, and the amount of time that the search is going to take depends on a variety of factors. Some of those factors include, what's the search scope? In other words, are searching all of Office 365, or are you limiting your search to one specific product? Also, how many users do you have? The more users you have, the longer the search is typically going to take to complete. So there are a variety of factors that determine how long the search is going to take. Okay, so the search is completed, and in this case, the search only took a couple of minutes, because I'm working in a lab environment, rather than a production Office 365 environment. So let's take a look at some of the search results. Remember, I performed a search across the whole of Office 365. So up at the top, we have a Medium-severity alert, and this indicates that an eDiscovery search was started or exported, so that's a good thing to know about. If I look down here, you can see something from the Message Center, saying that there is a Major Change Update Notification. Also handy information. And if I continue scrolling down, we can see a variety of result types. Here we have some more things from the Message Center, and then here is something from where someone added me to a Sample Plan group. So this was from when somebody was using the Planner application within Office 365, and then added my name to a plan within Planner. So this just shows you how, if you search across all locations, you can get results from everything, from the Message Center, to Security & Compliance center, to even individual Office 365 applications. So that's why it's a good idea to narrow down your search to specific applications, unless you need to search across the entire Office 365 environment. So, that's how searching works in Office 365 Security & Compliance center.
