- Many organizations operating in an on-premise environment will be using Windows Server and specifically active directory to manage the authentication and authorization of their users and devices. One of the features of active directory is the ability to use Group Policy to configure device and user settings. Microsoft recognized this and they want to smooth the path to making that transition from the on-prem environment to the cloud, replacing active directory and Group Policy with enter ID and Intune. And specifically an Intune device configuration profiles. Group Policy objects or GPOs, are linked to containers in an active director environment. Those containers might be sites, domains, or organizational units. A GPO can contain hundreds, even thousands of configurable settings.
