- [Instructor] As we'll see the Autodesk standard surface material is physically based and designed to be renderer agnostic. Meaning that it will work with almost any renderer. However, regardless of that, you're going to need to set up your specific renderer before you begin any material look development. And that's because you need to optimize performance as well as render options such as the Ray Depth. Otherwise your test renders of materials may not give you an accurate representation of what you'll get in a production rendering. In this course, I'm using the Arnold renderer, which is the default in Maya. So let's check in on the Arnold renderer settings. From the status line, click on render settings. And we want to go into the system tab and choose whether we want to render on the CPU or the GPU or the graphics processing unit.
