The single biggest way to ensure the boss looks favorably upon your work as the leader of your team is to be sure you understand his or her expectations of you very clearly. Let's dive in a little deeper and think about how you make sure that happens. The first thing to do is stop assuming you know what your boss is thinking. It happens all the time. You're busy and time passes by without addressing this issue. But you had your performance evaluation discussion, didn't you? So you know what they expect right? Well, maybe. But depending on your communication skills, how well they prepared for your evaluation, and how much things have shifted since then, you might not be as clear about expectations as you think. That's why you're going to be proactive. First formally, by being very prepared for your evaluation. Assume they'll miss something and be ready to fill them in.
