- Analyzing job descriptions to determine your fit with a position will allow you to compare it with what you can do for the employer and how they will view you as a candidate. Most employers are looking for you to match approximately 75 percent of their skill and knowledge needs. This shows that you're a good fit, while still leaving room for you to grow. As far as qualifications, you'll need to match all of their requirements. Remember, some of the qualifications are flexible, which means you can compensate with another area of strength. If you're looking at your gap analysis, a tool that helps you determine where the gaps in your experience are, and you're not strong match yet, then you'll need to make some decisions. If you're looking to make an immediate change, one option is to do a gap analysis on your second or third choice career option. You may match better with a different option.
