- Because people fear speaking in public more than death, it led comedian Jerry Seinfeld to joke at a funeral people would rather be in the casket than gave the eulogy. Now, while this joke is funny, it actually highlights the way people approach public speaking, with dread. Many of us, because we fear speaking in public, get very, very worked up about it. It becomes very emotional, and by definition, emotions often aren't rational. A great way to address this irrationality that we associate with speaking in public is to invoke techniques that help us to make our fears more rational. So the first thing you can do when you approach a public speaking exercise is to think about all the things that make you nervous, all the things you're afraid of, and literally write those down.
