In the workplace, no is not a complete sentence. I can remember one time when I asked a colleague for a simple favor over WorkMessenger and their entire response was no. No explanation, no alternative. It felt off-putting, even uncollaborative. That's why to manage up with emotional intelligence, you have to push back tactfully in a way that protects your time, but also your reputation. Let's go over three techniques that work. First is the conditional yes. You agree to do a task as a one-time thing or an exception while setting the stage for a boundary or a limit in the future. Here's what this can sound like. I understand how important this is, so I'm ready to take it on this time, but I want to be upfront. I can't always accommodate last minute changes.
