Horizontal vs. vertical teams in relation to platforms

- Let's discuss the healthy tension between horizontal platform teams and vertical feature teams. Horizontal platform teams are responsible for creating value across the ecosystem of products. They lead the overall platform, define the standards and provide shared services to vertical feature teams. Vertical feature teams are responsible for delivering specific features and experiences that are catered to the users they're focused on. In the example of DoorDash and Google Maps DoorDash would be the vertical while Google Maps would be the horizontal. While horizontal platform teams provide the foundation and governance for the platform, vertical feature teams have the autonomy to build and deliver features on their roadmap. Horizontal teams can often look to the needs of their vertical counterparts to inspire the next iteration of the platform.
