- Of course, it makes intuitive sense that it's a good idea to build up goodwill with your colleagues, but how do you do it effectively and in a way that's genuine and doesn't seem like you're angling for something down the road? I'm going to share three strategies you can follow to create goodwill. You can't effectively be a giver if you don't know your clients and colleagues first. Of course, there are things every human appreciates, like genuine praise for specific actions, not platitudes in service of sucking up to someone. But if you really want to build up goodwill, you first have to know who someone is and what they care about in order to understand what they value and how you can be of help. In the 1980s, businessman and author, Harvey Mackay, introduced a concept called the Mackay 66, which was a list of 66 questions.
