- [Narrator] There's a motivational trope for innovation taken from an often misquoted line in the 1989 Kevin Costner film "Field of Dreams". The trope is, if we build it they will come. The actual line refers to you and he, not we and they. But in general, the trope is a metaphor for the Law of Attraction, if you take the time to work hard, come up with a really great idea and make a product out of it that delivers value, the market will beat a path to your door. I can tell you from my experience with global product manufacturers across many industries, that as a rule, this trope simply isn't true. Long before companies sink sizable investments into bringing new products to market they want to see clear signals and trends that show that their product is going to enjoy smooth market entry and be widely accepted. They also want to know if it's even possible to bring their product to market or if someone else has beaten them…
