"The trouble with not having a goal is that you can spend your life running up and down the field and never score." That's a great quote from author Bill Copeland. It's hard to believe that many managers don't use goals in performance management, because it naturally contains simple and powerful neuroscience. The very act of goal-setting, which typically includes writing them down, dramatically increases the likelihood of improving results and overall performance. Here's why. First, it creates ownership. A critical approach in coaching is that each team member feels and creates their own pressure to change.
