- Pull out your calendar. Now, fast forward to 2059. At the current rate, that's how long it will take for women to achieve pay equity. Inside of top-rated companies in the world, the Fortune 100, women comprise only 6% of the highest ranking titles, and this tiny number, just 6%, has stayed flat for over 20 years. The statistics for women of color are even worse. Of the Fortune 500 companies, 90% are run by men, only 8.8% of them are run by women, and less than 1% are led by women of color. How did the world get to be this way? The first thing to recognize is that this isn't a new phenomenon. Whether as a result of traditional roles imposed on women or actual laws enforced through a legal system, women have been shut out of professional and educational opportunities for centuries.
